Causes of Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence) in Men There are many underlying conditions that could be primary causes of your erectile dysfunction (ED). If you have erectile dysfunction, it is worth considering the underlying factors that might be contributing to this condition.


The causes of erectile dysfunction often boil down to three categories: physical, psychological and lifestyle factors. In many cases, erectile dysfunction can be the product of more than one of these causes.


Physical Causes of Erectile Dysfunction:


In many men, erectile dysfunction can be triggered by something physical. Physical causes of erectile dysfunction include:

  • Heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Clogged blood vessels (atherosclerosis)

  • Metabolic syndrome

Psychological Causes of Erectile Dysfunction:

There are a number of psychological factors that can contribute to erectile dysfunction. These can interfere with sexual feelings and cause or worsen erectile dysfunction. Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Relationship problems

Lifestyle Factors that Contribute to Erectile Dysfunction:


Not only do physical and psychological factors contribute to erectile dysfunction in men, there are some lifestyle factors that contribute to impotence in men as well. In addition to treating erectile dysfunction with medications like Viagra and Cialis, it is worth considering making some lifestyle changes. The following lifestyle factors can contribute to erectile dysfunction:

  • Some prescription medications - including antidepressants, antihistamines, medications to treat high blood pressure, pain killers, or medications to treat prostate conditions
  • Tobacco use
  • Alcoholism
  • Substance abuse - especially if you’re a long-time drug user
  • Disturbed sleep or lack of sleep
  • Being overweight
  • Certain medical treatments - prostate surgery, radiation treatment for cancer
  • Cycling - if you cycle more than three hours a week you are at an increased risk of erectile dysfunction
