What is Tamsulosin 400 micrograms?
Tamsulosin 400 micrograms is a medication used to treat urinary retention. It is specifically prescribed to men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) who are between the ages of 45 and 75.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia causes an enlarged prostate gland (one that isn’t cancerous). The enlarged prostate can pinch the urethra, causing an obstruction that stops urine passing and prevents the bladder from emptying.
If you have urinary retention, it can also take longer to urinate, become difficult to start urinating, and you may need to urinate more frequently than usual.
How does Tamsulosin work?
Tamsulosin hydrochloride is the active ingredient in these capsules and each capsule contains 0.4mg of this ingredient. Tamulosin is part of a group of medicines called ‘alpha blockers’.
Tamulosin works to smooth and relax the muscles around the urethra and the prostate gland, making it easier for urine to pass through the urethra. It also helps to ease the urge you feel when you need to go to the toilet.
Do not take Tamsulosin if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine
- You have severe liver problems
- You faint, or become dizzy or weak when standing up or sitting down suddenly
You should talk to your doctor before taking this medication if any of the following apply to you:
- You have kidney problems
- You have blurry or cloudy vision that hasn’t been checked by an optician
- You’re due to have surgery for glaucoma or cataract
How do you take Tamsulosin?
It’s important that you take Tamsulosin as prescribed by your doctor. Only men between the ages of 45 and 75 years should take this medication.
Take one Tamsulosin capsule after breakfast each day, with a drink of water. Swallow it whole rather than crushing or chewing it.
How effective is Tamsulosin?
Tamsulosin is a clinically proven treatment for urinary retention. It is a long-term treatment which works most effectively when prescribed for a long period of time.
It is important that you have regular check-ups with your doctor when taking this medication, particularly if your symptoms don’t improve or actually worsen.
What are the main side effects of Tamsulosin?
Like all medicines, Tamsulosin can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects of Tamsulosin are:
- Dizziness when going to sit down or stand up
- Ejaculation failure
- Retrograde ejaculation (a completely harmless side effect where semen goes into the bladder rather than leaving the body through the urethra)
