What is Vesicare?
Vesicare is a medicine used to treat an overactive bladder. It can help to ease symptoms of urinary incontinence such as frequently needing to urinate and having a sudden, strong urge to go to the toilet with little or no warning.
Vesicare is available in 5mg and 10mg tablets, but you should only take the dosage prescribed by your doctor.
How does Vesicare work?
Vesicare tablets contain an active ingredient called solifenacin succinate. This is in a group of medications called anticholinergics.
Vesicare works to increase the amount of urine your bladder can hold, therefore increasing the amount of time you can last in between trips to the bathroom.
How do you take Vesicare?
Make sure you take Vesicare exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Take one tablet daily. Don’t crush or chew the tablet but swallow it whole with water. Depending on your personal preferences, you might want to take your tablet at the same time as a meal or not.
The usual dose of Vesicare is 5mg a day, but your doctor may prescribe 10mg a day.
How effective is Vesicare?
When taken correctly, Vesicare is clinically proven to treat the symptoms of an overactive bladder, but it can take about two weeks for your symptoms to begin to improve. Don’t stop taking the medication without talking to your doctor first as your symptoms may return.
You can make some lifestyle changes to help your medication work as effectively as possible. Drink the equivalent of 8 glasses of water each day and try to avoid drinking too many caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. If you are overweight or obese, losing weight can also help to ease your symptoms.
What are the main side effects of Vesicare?
Like all medicines, Vesicare can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects of Vesicare are:
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
For a full list of Vesicare side effects, please see the patient information leaflet.
