What are Ovex tablets and suspension?

Ovex tablets and suspension are medicines used to treat infections of threadworms in adults and children.

Ovex tablets are chewable worming tablets for humans.

Ovex suspension is a banana flavoured liquid. It’s available in a 30ml bottle, which contains 6 doses.

How does Ovex work?

The active ingredient in Ovex is mebendazole. Mebendazole is in a group of medicines called anthelmintics, which are anti-parasitic drugs designed to kill parasitic worms in humans.

Each tablet and each 5ml of Ovex suspension contains 100mg of mebendazole.

How do you take Ovex?

Always use Ovex as directed by your doctor or pharmacist for maximum effectiveness against threadworm symptoms in adults. Both the tablets and suspension should be taken orally.

Ovex tablet: take one tablet. It can be chewed or swallowed whole with water. Another tablet can be taken two weeks later to prevent reinfection.

Ovex suspension: Shake the bottle well, then take 5ml. You can take a further 5ml two weeks later.

Pregnant women, breastfeeding women and children under 2 years old should not be treated with Ovex. Instead, you should talk to your doctor.

How effective are Ovex suspension and tablets?

Ovex is a clinically proven threadworm treatment if taken correctly. For maximum effectiveness, you should treat everyone in the household at the same time.

It’s important to bear in mind that although this threadworm medication kills the live worms, the eggs can live outside the body for up to two weeks. To prevent reinfection you should be extra careful to maintain good hygiene standards.

This means washing your hands thoroughly after going to the toilet and before preparing food and eating. It’s also a good idea to keep your nails trimmed short. Clean your bathroom and kitchen thoroughly and vacuum regularly.

If your child is infected, encourage them not to scratch their bottom and make sure they wash their hands before eating and after going to the toilet. Make sure they wear underwear in bed and change it in the morning.

What are the main side effects of Ovex?

Like all medicines, Ovex threadworm medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects of both Ovex suspension and tablets are:

  1. Abdominal discomfort
  2. Wind
  3. Diarrhoea

For a full list of Ovex side effects, please see the patient information leaflets: Ovex tablets and Ovex suspension.
