What is Testogel?

Testogel is a gel used for treatment for hypogonadism (low or no testosterone production in males.) It is a form of testosterone replacement therapy. Low testosterone can have a number of unwanted clinical symptoms such as erectile dysfunction, low sex drive, regression of masculine characteristics or infertility.

Testogel should only be used after two separate blood testosterone measurements have been taken, and it has been confirmed by your doctor that you are suffering from low testosterone. It is available on prescription, or alternatively can be prescribed by us online following an online consultation. Testogel is a brand name - the active ingredient is testosterone.

For more information on Testogel, read the patient information leaflet.

How it works

Testosterone is a male hormone produced naturally in the body. If not enough of it is produced, it can lead to numerous unwanted symptoms. Testogel simply replaces the testosterone in your bloodstream that your body is not making.

Testogel comes as 5g gel in sachets, each containing 50 mg of testosterone. You may be prescribed more than one sachet per day. It usually takes the body two to three days to respond to treatment with Testogel.

Before you take it

Testosterone therapy treatments such as Testogel may aggravate certain existing conditions such as epilepsy or migraines. Discuss this with your doctor before using Testogel if this applies to you. Testogel may also cause a rise in blood pressure.

If you suffer from liver, kidney or heart disease, this drug may cause water retention. Sometimes this can be accompanied by congestive heart failure. You must consult your doctor or medical professional before taking Testogel if this applies to you, as heart failure can be fatal.

If you have prostate cancer or breast cancer, you should speak to your doctor before taking Testogel, as it may be unsuitable for you. You should also not take this medication if you are allergic to any of the medication’s ingredients.

If you have cancer that affects your bones, taking Testogel may increase the levels of calcium in your blood and urine. It may be necessary for your doctor to monitor the levels of calcium in your blood while you are being treated with Testogel.

Testogel must never be used by women for any reason. If you are a woman and you use Testogel, it may cause you to develop masculine characteristics such as deepening of the voice and increased facial and bodily hair.

For the reason stated above, if you take Testogel you are advised to take a shower or wear a shirt over the area of application before skin-to-skin contact with a woman, as Testogel and its effects can also be transferred through intimate contact. You must also apply Testogel yourself - do not get anyone else, especially a female, to apply it to your body for you.

During pregnancy or lactation, you must be particularly careful to avoid skin-to-skin contact with the pregnant or lactating woman, as Testogel may affect the development of an unborn baby. It is very important that anyone else washes vigorously with soap and water after contact with your affected area, otherwise testosterone transfer may occur.

Testogel does not impact your ability to drive or operate machinery.

Testogel should not be used by anyone under the age of 18. It is not suitable for children to treat any condition.

Testogel is known to interact with some other drugs or medications. You should speak with your doctor to discuss whether Testogel is suitable for you if you are taking any of the following:

  • Any medicines that thin the blood, including warfarin and aspirin
  • Corticosteroids such as prednisolone or hydrocortisone
  • Any medication containing oxyphenbutazone
  • Bupropion, as taking this with Testogel may cause seizures
  • Any medication that affects liver function, including natural remedies such as eucalyptus and valerian
  • Insulin therapy for diabetes

Dosage Instructions

This medication is for adult men only. You should take it exactly as your doctor has instructed you to. If you are in any way unsure or need more direction on applying the gel, speak with your doctor or pharmacist first.

The usual dose is 5g of testosterone gel, applied once daily. Your dose may be adjusted at your doctor’s discretion up to a maximum of 10g of gel per day. A 5 g sachet contains 50mg of testosterone.

Testogel should be used at the same time each day, preferably in the morning. It must be spread on dry, clean, healthy skin, as a thin layer on the shoulders, back, chest and arms.

Do not apply the gel to the penis or testes, as this may cause skin irritation.

The gel should be applied only to healthy skin - do not apply it to cracked or damaged skin.

After you open the sachet, empty the whole sachet and apply it to your skin immediately. Allow the gel to dry for five minutes before dressing.

Testogel should be stored at room temperature, in a dry, cool place. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.

If you have any questions, consult the patient information leaflet or speak with your doctor.
