What is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Some examples of what it is prescribed to treat includes sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and urinary tract infections, as well as infections of the eyes, nose, throat and chest.
How does Doxycycline work?
Doxycycline is part of the tetracycline group of antibiotics. It works by stopping the bacteria growing that are causing an infection.
Antibiotics don’t work for viral infections, so you should only take this medication if it has been prescribed to you. Otherwise you may find antibiotics are less effective when you really need them.
How do you take Doxycycline 100mg capsules?
Always take Doxycycline as directed by your doctor or pharmacist and complete the full course of treatment that you’re given.
The Doxycycline 100mg dosage for syphilis is to take one capsule twice a day for 14 days. Make sure you take your capsule with plenty of fluid.
Don’t take Doxycycline just before going to bed or whilst you are lying down. You also shouldn’t drink alcohol whilst taking this medication.
How effective is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline capsules are a clinically proven syphilis treatment, but you should have tested positive for syphilis before taking this medication. Taking antibiotics for syphilis when you don’t actually need them means they may not work as effectively for you in the future when you do need them.
To avoid becoming re-infected with syphilis and other STIs you should practice safe sex. This means using condoms when having vaginal, anal and oral sex, not sharing sex toys and using a dental dam for oral sex.
What are the main side effects of Doxycycline?
Like all medicines, Doxycycline can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects of Doxycycline are:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Worsening of systemic lupus erythematous (SLE), an allergic condition that causes fever, joint pain and skin rash.
For a full list of Doxycycline side effects, please see the patient information leaflet.
