What is Doxycycline?

Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which means it is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.

Some examples of what it treats includes sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and urinary tract infections, as well as infections of the skin, eyes, respiratory tract, nose, throat and chest.

How does Doxycycline work?

Doxycycline is an antibiotic in the tetracycline group, which works by killing the bacteria that are cause infections.

You shouldn’t take Doxycycline if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients.

You should talk to your doctor before taking Doxycycline if you:

  • Have liver problems
  • Have porphyria
  • Are sensitive to sunlight
  • Have severe heart problems
  • Have myasthenia gravis
  • Have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • Are taking antacids (containing aluminium, calcium or magnesium), medicines containing iron, bismuth or zinc salts, warfarin or other blood thinners, penicillin, rifampicin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, phenytoin or primidone, methoxyflurane, or ciclosporin.

How do you take Doxycycline?

You should take your Doxycycline 100mg antibiotics as directed by your doctor. Take the full course of treatment as prescribed.

The dosage for treating mycoplasma genitalium is to take one 100mg capsule twice a day for 7 days. Swallow the capsule with a full glass of water. If you find the medication irritates your stomach, it may be a good idea to take it at the same time as food.

You shouldn’t drink alcohol when taking Doxycycline. You should also take this medication when sitting down or standing, and well before going to bed. You shouldn’t lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking Doxycycline as the medication can irritate your gullet.

Antibiotics can’t treat viral infections, so you should only take this medication if it has been prescribed to you. Otherwise, you may find antibiotics are less effective when you really need them.

How effective are Doxycycline?

Doxycycline capsules are effective at treating the STI mycoplasma genitalium as long as they are taken as prescribed.

If you are undergoing treatment for mycoplasma genitalium (MG) you should avoid having sex. This will help to prevent you becoming reinfected or infecting anyone else. You should also use condoms in future when having oral, vaginal or anal sex to avoid a reinfection of MG or any other STI.

What are the main side effects of Doxycycline?

Doxycycline can cause side effects like any medicine can, although not everyone will experience them.

Three of the most common side effects of Doxycycline are:

  1. Nausea or vomiting
  2. Heartburn
  3. Loss of appetite

For a full list of Doxycycline side effects, please see the patient information leaflet. You should read this fully before beginning your treatment.
