What is Azithromycin?

Azithromycin tablets are in a group of medicines called macrolide antibiotics. Antibiotics are prescribed to treat bacterial infections such as mycoplasma genitalium and some other STIs.

It’s also used to treat chest, throat, ear or nose infections.

How does Azithromycin work?

Azithromycin tablets work to kill the bacteria and other microorganisms that cause infections in the body.

You shouldn’t take Azithromycin if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients.

You should talk to your doctor before taking Azithromycin if any of the following apply:

  • You have severe liver or kidney problems
  • You have severe heart problems
  • You have low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood
  • You are showing signs of another infection
  • You have myasthenia gravis
  • You have neurological or psychiatric problems
  • You are taking any ergot derivatives such as ergotamine, antacids, statins, warfarin or other blood thinners, cisapride, terfenadine, zidovudine or nelfinavir, rifabutin, quinidine, cyclosporin, alfentanil, theophylline, digoxin, astemizol, or pimozide.

How do you take Azithromycin?

It’s important to only take Azithromycin 500mg as directed by your doctor.

A single dose of 1000mg of Azithromycin should be sufficient to treat mycoplasma genitalium. Take two 500mg tablets with half a glass of water. The tablets can be taken either with or without food.

To avoid building a resistance to antibiotics, you should only take them when absolutely necessary. You also shouldn’t share them with other people.

How effective are Azithromycin?

As long as they are taken as prescribed, Azithromycin tablets are effective at treating mycoplasma genitalium.

To prevent infecting anyone else and to avoid becoming reinfected yourself, it’s important not to have sex whilst undergoing treatment for mycoplasma genitalium. You should also practice safe sex in future to avoid contracting mycoplasma genitalium and other STIs.

What are the main side effects of Azithromycin?

Azithromycin can cause side effects like any medicine can, although not everyone will experience them.

Three of the most common side effects of Azithromycin are:

  1. Abdominal discomfort and pain
  2. Diarrhoea and flatulence
  3. Feeling sick

For a full list of Azithromycin side effects, please see the patient information leaflet. You should read this fully before beginning your treatment.
