Valaciclovir is a "prodrug," in that it is not active itself. Rather, it is converted to aciclovir in the body, and it is the aciclovir that is active against the viruses. It belongs to a class of drugs called nucleoside analogs that mimic one of the building blocks of DNA. It stops the spread of herpes virus in the body by preventing the replication of Genital Herpes viral DNA that is necessary for viruses to multiply.
If the treatment with Valaciclovir is started early on in the episode of symptoms, it tends to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms during an episode of genital herpes.
