What is Terbinafine?

Terbinafine 250mg tablets and cream are a medications that are used to treat fungal infections. It belongs to a group of medicines called antifungal drugs. Terbinafine tablets and cream can be used to treat ringworm infections of:

  • The groin area
  • The skin
  • The feet
  • Toe and fingernails

How does Terbinafine work?

Terbinafine is an antifungal medication that works by destroying the fungi responsible for causing the ringworm infection. Terbinafine can be either taken as a tablet or applied as a cream.

How do you take Terbinafine?

Always take this medication exactly as it has been prescribed to you. The dosage of Terbinafine is different depending on the type of fungal infection you are trying to treat.


Tinea Pedis: For foot infections, also known as athlete's foot, you will need to take One tablet daily for 6 weeks

Tinea Corpis: For skin infections over the body and scalp you need to take one tablet daily for 4 weeks.

Tinea Cruris: Groin infections, also known as jock itch, you need to take one tablet daily for 4 weeks.

Tinea Unguium: For nail infections you will need to take one tablet daily for 3 months, this is because fungal nail infections are harder to treat.


Always wash your hands before and after use.

Apply the cream thinly and evenly to the affected area TWICE daily for up to TWO weeks. Gently rub it in. If your infection clears sooner, you can stop using the medication.

Once opened, the cream should be used within two weeks.

How effective is Terbinafine?

Terbinafine tablets and cream are both clinically proven ways of treating ringworm and other fungal infections. There are other precautions you should take to prevent spreading ringworm. Some of these include:

  • Washing your clothes in hot water with antifungal detergent
  • Do not scratch affected areas as this can spread the infection
  • Wash hands regularly with soap
  • Try to avoid excessive sweating

What are the side effects of Terbinafine?

Like all medicines, Terbinafine can cause side effects although not everyone will experience them. Side effects are typically mild to moderate and only last a short duration.

The main side effects of Terbinafine tablets are loss of appetite, feeling of fullness and indigestion.

The main side effects of Terbinafine cream are redness, stinging and itching.
