What is Marvelon?
Marvelon is a combined oral contraceptive pill that women take to protect against pregnancy. It contains synthetic versions of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone. The doses of hormones in the pills disrupt your body’s cycle to stop the conditions being right for pregnancy.
Bear in mind that Marvelon can’t protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like a barrier method of contraception (like a condom) would.
How does Marvelon work?
Marvelon contraceptive pill stops the body releasing an egg, meaning there is no egg for the sperm to fertilise. This pill also thickens the mucus at the cervix, which prevents any sperm getting through.
The two active ingredients in Marvelon are ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel, which are synthetic versions of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone.
How do you take Marvelon?
You should take the Marvelon pill as directed by your GP or pharmacist. Be sure to read the patient information leaflet as it contains full details of how to take this contraceptive pill, including what to do if you miss a pill.
Take one pill every day for 21 days, followed by a 7 day break. You are still protected from pregnancy during the 7 day break. You then start the next strip of pills following your 7 day break.
How effective is Marvelon?
Marvelon is a clinically proven oral contraceptive pill, which is very effective as long as it is taken correctly.
If you suffer from a bout of vomiting or diarrhoea soon after taking Marvelon, your pill may be less effective as your body may not have been able to absorb the full dose of hormones. Follow the procedure in the patient information leaflet should this happen.
What are the main side effects of Marvelon?
Like all medicines, Marvelon birth control pill can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Three common Marvelon side effects are:
- Weight gain
- Painful or tender breasts
Like other pills, Marvelon oral contraceptive can increase your chance of developing a blood clot. For more information on this and for a full list of Marvelon pill side effects, please see the patient information leaflet.
