What is Cilest?

Cilest is a combined contraceptive pill that is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It contains synthetic oestrogen and progestogen, which disrupts your body’s natural cycle and stops the conditions being right for pregnancy.

It’s important to remember that Cilest doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like a condom would.

How does Cilest work?

Cilest tablets work in three ways. It stops ovulation, makes the mucus at the cervix thicker to prevent sperm getting through, and it prevents the lining of the womb from thickening.

The active ingredients in Cilest are 250 micrograms of the progestogen called norgestimate and 35 micrograms of the oestrogen called ethinylestradiol.

How do you take Cilest?

You should take the Cilest pill as directed by your GP or pharmacist. Take one pill every day for 21 days, followed by a 7 day break. You are still protected from pregnancy during the 7 day break. The patient information leaflet contains full details, including what to do if you miss a pill.

Bear in mind that if you vomit or suffer from diarrhoea soon after taking Cilest contraceptive pill, your body may not have absorbed the full dose of hormones from the pill. If this happens, you should follow the advice in the patient information leaflet.
