What is Levonelle 1500?

The morning after pill (emergency contraception) is not to be taken as a form of birth control. Emergency contraception does NOT protect you from sexually transmitted diseases or infections.

Levonelle 1500 is the generic version of the brand-name emergency contraceptive, Levonelle One Step. Like other morning after pills, Levonelle 1500 is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or after other birth control methods have failed such as when a condom breaks.

Levonelle 1500 does not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections. In addition, Levonelle is not a method of abortion and will not terminate a pregnancy.

Please be aware that the effectiveness of the pill decreases over time

• 95% effective the first 24 hours after having unprotective sex

• 85% effective between 24 – 48 hours

• 58% effective between 48 – 72 hours

• The EllaOne tablet is 95% effective between 48 – 120 hours

If you vomit within 3 hours of taking, a replacement dose is required
Do not use after expiry date
Take as prescribed

How does Levonelle 1500 work?

Levonelle 1500 contains the active ingredient levonorgestrel. This prevents expected pregnancies when taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. It is more effective if you take it as soon as possible after having unprotected sexual intercourse. Levonelle 1500 works by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg or preventing sperm from fertilising an egg that may have already been released.

How do you take Levonelle 1500?

Levonelle 1500 is one tablet that is taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse. Take the morning after pill as soon as possible after having unprotected sex. Ideally, emergency contraception should be taken within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours after intercourse.

Do not chew this tablet. Take this medication with water.

If you vomit within three hours of taking this medication, you should immediately take another tablet.

How effective is Levonelle 1500 as an emergency contraception method?

The morning after pill’s effectiveness is higher when taken closer to the time of intercourse. Levonelle 1500 is not an effective way of terminating a pregnancy and cannot be used to cause an abortion. In addition, Levonelle 1500 does not provide protection against sexually transmitted infections.

It is important to bear in mind that the morning after pill becomes less effective with time, so it’s important to take it as soon as possible after having unprotected sex.
