What is Levonelle 1500?
The morning after pill (emergency contraception) is not to be taken as a form of birth control. Emergency contraception does NOT protect you from sexually transmitted diseases or infections.
Levonelle 1500 is the generic version of the brand-name emergency contraceptive, Levonelle One Step. Like other morning after pills, Levonelle 1500 is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or after other birth control methods have failed such as when a condom breaks.
Levonelle 1500 does not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections. In addition, Levonelle is not a method of abortion and will not terminate a pregnancy.
Please be aware that the effectiveness of the pill decreases over time
• 95% effective the first 24 hours after having unprotective sex
• 85% effective between 24 – 48 hours
• 58% effective between 48 – 72 hours
• The EllaOne tablet is 95% effective between 48 – 120 hours
How does Levonelle 1500 work?
Levonelle 1500 contains the active ingredient levonorgestrel. This prevents expected pregnancies when taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. It is more effective if you take it as soon as possible after having unprotected sexual intercourse. Levonelle 1500 works by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg or preventing sperm from fertilising an egg that may have already been released.
