What is Maxalt Melt?
Maxalt Melt is an orodispersible migraine treatment. Maxalt Melt dissolves on the tongue. It is therefore ideal for anyone who struggles to swallow tablets or capsules. Maxalt Melt reduces the swelling of the blood vessels in the brain that cause the migraine attack.
Maxalt Melt is the brand-name, orodispersible (dissolvable) version of Rizatriptan. Rizatriptan is also available to buy.
How does Maxalt Melt 10 mg work?
Like other prescription migraine medications, Maxalt for migraines works by alleviating migraine symptoms once a migraine has already started.
The active ingredient in Maxalt Melt is rizatriptan. Rizatriptan is belongs to a class of medicines called selective serotonin 5-HT 1B/1D agonists. These medications work by stimulating serotonin, a neurotransmitter found in the brain. This leads to a reduction in inflammation and constricted blood vessels in the brain which stops the migraine.
How do you take Maxalt Melt?
Always take this medication exactly as it has been prescribed to you by your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take more than 2 doses of Maxalt Melt in a 24 hour period. You should leave at least 2 hours between doses.
The usual dose of Maxalt Melt is 10 mg. If you are currently taking propranolol or have kidney or liver problems, you should take a 5 mg dose of Maxalt Melt.
How to take Maxalt Melt:
- Open the Maxalt Melt blister pack with dry hands
- Place the Maxalt Melt wafer on your tongue.
- Once dissolved, swallow the Maxalt Melt with saliva.

Maxalt Melt can take longer to work if it is taken after food.
