What is Imigran?
Imigran (sumatriptan) is used to treat migraines. Imigran is an effective migraine medication which can relieve all migraine symptoms, including nausea and vomiting.
Imigran is the brandname version of Sumatriptan, which is less expensive. Sumatriptan is available here.
How does Imigran work?
Imigran contains the active ingredient sumatriptan. Sumatriptan belongs to a group of medicines called triptans, also known as 5-HT1 receptor agonists. Triptans work by stimulating serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, to reduce inflammation and constrict blood vessels, ultimately stopping migraines.
How do you take Imigran?
Always take this medication as it has been prescribed to you by your doctor or pharmacist.
It’s best to take Imigran as soon as you feel a migraine coming on, although you can take it at any time during a migraine. Do not use Imigran to try to prevent a migraine. Imigran should only be taken once your symptoms start.
The usual dose for adults aged 18 – 65 is one Imigran 50 mg tablet. The migraine tablet should be swallowed whole with water. If your symptoms start to come back, you can take a second Imigran tablet if at least 2 hours have passed since the first tablet. Do not take more than 300 mg (or six 50 mg tablets) in a 24 hour period.
How effective is Imigran?
Imigran is an effective way of treating migraines. If you do not feel relief after taking Imigran, talk to your doctor or pharmacist who may adjust your dosage.
In addition to taking Imigran, if your migraines are caused by triggers, you should avoid them as best you can.
What are the most common side effects of Imigran?
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The side effects of this medication at usually mild to moderate and only last a short period of time.
