What are Fybogel Mebeverine sachets?

Fybogel Mebeverine is an antispasmodic medication used to treat IBS symptoms. It relaxes the gut and relieves abdominal pain and bowel spasms. It can also help to restore and maintain bowel regularity.

How do Fybogel Mebeverine sachets work?

Fybogel Mebeverine contains ispaghula husk, a plant material that is high in fibre and helps to bulk out the contents of the gut. This in turn helps the digestive system work normally and relieves spasms and cramps. You should make sure to drink lots of water when taking Fybogel to help manage your IBS symptoms.

You should not take Fybogel Mebeverine if you are allergic to ispaghula husk or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.

How do you take Fybogel Mebeverine?

Fybogel Mebeverine should be taken as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Adults and children aged 12 or over should take one sachet in the morning and one in the evening, half an hour before a meal. A further sachet can be taken before a meal at midday if symptoms are severe.

Fybogel Mebeverine must be taken with liquid. It’s important to try and avoid inhaling the powder when preparing the sachet. Add the powder from the sachet to a glass of cold water (at least 150ml), stir well and drink immediately. Don’t take Fybogel Mebeverine just before going to bed or 30 minutes to an hour before or after any other medicines.

How effective are Fybogel Mebeverine?

The effects of taking Fybogel Mebeverine may take 12-24 hours to show. You should see your doctor if your symptoms worsen, change, or don’t improve within two weeks of starting treatment.

Other things you can do to help with managing IBS symptoms includes:

  • Eating regular meals (and taking your time when you’re eating)
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Exercising regularly
  • Taking time to relax where possible

What are the side effects of Fybogel Mebeverine?

Like all medicines, Fybogel Mebeverine can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects are:

  • Flatulence and bloating for the first few days of treatment. This should lessen as treatment continues.
  • Difficulty swallowing and/or a bowel blockage, particularly if the medication isn’t taken with sufficient water.
  • Allergic reactions including an itchy skin rash, runny nose, redness around the eyes, breathing problems and, in some cases, anaphylaxis.

For more information, please see the patient information leaflet. If you experience any side effects, you can report them through the Yellow Card Scheme

The IBS Network advises that whilst Fybogel sachets treat constipation, they may result in more bloating, cramping and gas in the first few days of treatment. This should lessen as your bowel adjusts to the medication.
