What is Premique and Premique Low Dose?
Premique and Premique Low Dose are HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) medications, which are prescribed to alleviate menopause symptoms. They also help to prevent the onset of osteoporosis after menopause.
Premique and Premique Low Dose contain the same active ingredients, but Premique Low Dose is a low dose HRT medication that contains less of the ingredients.
Premique and Premique Low Dose HRT medications are only prescribed to postmenopausal women.
You shouldn’t take Premique or Premique Low Dose if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients
- You have or have ever had breast cancer
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have cancer which is sensitive to oestrogens, such as cancer of the lining of the womb (endometrium)
- You have ever had a blood clot in a vein (thrombosis)
- You have a blood clotting disorder
- You have recently had a disease caused by blood clots in the arteries, such as a heart attack, stroke or angina
- You have a rare blood problem called “porphyria” which is passed down through families
- You have any unexplained vaginal bleeding
- You have excessive thickening of the womb lining (endometrial hyperplasia) that is not being treated
- You have or have previously had liver disease
How does Premique and Premique Low Dose work?
The production of the natural female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone lessens considerably during the transition into menopause. This hormonal fluctuation and decrease is what can cause the unpleasant symptoms associated with menopause.
Each Premique tablet contains 0.625 mg of conjugated estrogens (a replacement for oestrogen) and 5.0 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate (a replacement for progesterone).
Each Premique Low Dose tablet contains 0.3 mg of conjugated estrogens and 1.5 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate.
Premique and Premique Low Dose are period-free HRT medications, meaning you won’t have a monthly bleed when you are taking it. You may experience some irregular light bleeding or spotting during the first few months of taking Premique HRT medications but this should stop.
How do you take Premique and Premique Low Dose?
You should take your Premique or Premique Low Dose HRT treatment as prescribed by your doctor. The usual dosage for both of these medications is one tablet per day (unless the dose your doctor has prescribed is different).
Take one tablet each day, with water, until all 28 tablets have been taken. Start with the tablet marked with the day of the week and follow the arrows. There will be no tablet free days and you will start the next pack of treatment the following day.
It will be easier for you to remember to take your HRT tablet if you take it at the same time each day. If you don’t take your tablet at the usual time one day, take it as soon as you remember. It’s important that you never take a double dose if you miss a day for any reason.
You can start your course of Premique or Premique Low Dose at any time if you’re not already taking an HRT product or if you are taking an HRT medication that doesn’t give you a monthly bleed.
If you are already on HRT or your medication gives you a monthly bleed, you should start Premique or Premique Low Dose the day after you finish your current course of HRT.
How effective is Premique and Premique Low Dose?
Premique tablets are clinically proven to treat symptoms of menopause as long as they are taken as prescribed.
Your doctor will want to make sure that your symptoms are well managed and that you only take HRT for as long as you need to. For this reason, you should make sure you have regular check-ups with your GP to discuss your HRT.
Other changes you can make to help ease your menopausal symptoms includes eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly, stopping smoking and cutting back on alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods, using a vaginal lubricant and trying to reduce your stress levels.
What are the main side effects of Premique and Premique Low Dose?
Premique HRT tablets can cause side effects like any other medicines, although not everyone will experience them. Side effects are usually temporary with HRT, but if you have any concerns at all you should see your doctor.
Three of the most common side effects for Premique HRT medications are:
- Breast pain or tenderness
- Breakthrough bleeding or spotting
Taking HRT in the form of tablets can increase your risk of a blood clot. Your doctor will discuss this with you, but be certain you understand the risks associated with HRT before you start a course of treatment.
Women on HRT are more likely to experience the following diseases than women who aren’t on HRT:
- breast cancer
- ovarian cancer
- heart disease
- endometrial hyperplasia / cancer (abnormal growth / cancer of the womb lining)
- blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs (venous thromboembolism)
- probable memory loss if HRT is started over the age of 65
