What is Simvastatin?

Simvastatin is a kind of medicine in the statin family. It lowers levels of bad (LDL) cholesterol, lowers levels of triglycerides (a fatty substance in the blood) and also raises levels of good (HDL) cholesterol.

How does Simvastatin work?

Statins work to control the amount of fatty substances, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, in the blood. To make sure it can work as efficiently as possible, it’s important to continue eating a low-cholesterol diet when taking this medication.

How do you take Simvastatin?

Always take Simvastatin as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist. Simvastatin is available in 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg tablets. Your doctor will review and amend your dosage as necessary at four weekly intervals.

Take one tablet every evening. You can take it with or without food, but you should swallow it whole with water.

You shouldn’t drink more than two small glasses of grapefruit juice a day when you are taking Simvastatin. Grapefruit juice can alter the way Simvastatin works in the body.

How effective is Simvastatin?

When taken as prescribed, Simvastatin is a clinically proven treatment to reduce high cholesterol.

There are a few things you can do to help your medication work as efficiently as possible and maintain good cholesterol levels. Make sure your diet is as healthy as possible, and low in saturated fat in particular. You should also eat a variety of fruits and vegetables and try to maintain a healthy weight by exercising. Finally, drink alcohol in moderation and avoid smoking.

What are the main side effects of Simvastatin?

Like all medicines, Simvastatin can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects of Simvastatin are:

  1. Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  2. Numbness or weakness in the limbs
  3. Headache or dizziness

For a full list of Simvastatin side effects, please see the patient information leaflet.
