What are Proctosedyl suppositories and ointment?
Proctosedyl suppositories and ointment are used to treat hemorrhoids (piles). Hemorrhoids (also spelled haemorrhoids) are swollen blood vessels in the anus. Similarly to Anusol suppositories, Proctosedyl suppositories are inserted into the anus, while the ointment is applied externally.
How does Proctosedyl work?
Proctosedyl ointment and suppositories contain the same active two ingredients, hydrochloride and hydrocortisone. When used either externally or internally these work to reduce the painful swelling and irritation caused by hemorrhoids. Hydrocortisone is a steroid that reduces inflammation, while cinchocaine hydrochloride is a numbing agent that relieves pain and itching.
