What is Rapitil?
Rapitil is an anti-allergy medication. It can be used to treat allergic conjunctivitis. Allergic conjunctivitis can be perennial or seasonal, and is caused when the body is exposed to an allergen such as flakes of skin from animals, pollen or dust mites. Symptoms include itchy, red, inflamed or watery eyes. Rapitil can help relieve these symptoms.
Rapitil is prescription only medication. You must have a valid prescription in order to buy it. However, it is possible for us to prescribe Rapitil to you following a brief online consultation. Contact us to find out more.
The active ingredient in Rapitil is nedocromil sodium. For more information on Rapitil, consult the patient information leaflet.
How it works
Rapitil contains the active ingredient nedocromil sodium. Nedocromil sodium reduces symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis by reducing allergic responses. It is not fully understood how it does this, but it is thought to work by stabilising immune cells and preventing a chemical called histamine from being released into your body. Histamine is what causes you to experience watery, red and inflamed eyes.
Rapitil comes as eye drops. Rapitil should not be used for more than 12 weeks, depending on the advice of your doctor.
Before you take it
You must not use Rapitil if you are allergic to the active ingredient nedocromil sodium, or any of the other ingredients in this medication. You should consult with your doctor, who will be able to recommend an alternative medicine to treat your allergic conjunctivitis.
Rapitil eye drops contain benzalkonium chloride. This can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and may cause eye irritation. For this reason, you must not wear soft contact lenses while using Rapitil.
If you wear gas-permeable or hard contact lenses, you must remove them when administering the eye drops, and wait 15 minutes before you put them back in.
Using any kind of eye drops may cause your vision to blur temporarily after you put them in. Do not drive or operate machinery until this has worn off. Rapitil should not make you drowsy, however you should not do anything requiring acute concentration before you know exactly how this medication affects you.
The safety of using this medication during pregnancy has not been fully established. For this reason, you should not use Rapitil during pregnancy without the specific approval of your doctor. They will decide whether the benefits of using it outweigh the risks.
It is not known whether this medication passes into breast milk. However, it is not expected to have harmful effects when passed on to a baby. You should speak with your doctor to ensure this medication is safe to use while breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you can minimise the amount of medication that passes into your bloodstream by pressing on your tear duct while administering the eye drops.
Rapitil may affect the absorption of insulin in the body. If you are diabetic, you should speak with your doctor to ascertain whether it is suitable for you to use Rapitil.
Rapitil eye drops are not expected to cause drug interactions with other medications. However, you must tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking before you use Rapitil.
This is not an exhaustive list of warnings or interactions. For a complete list, you must consult the patient information leaflet.
You must use Rapitil exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has prescribed. Do not exceed the stated dose. If you are in any way unsure of how to use Rapitil, consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
The typical dose for allergic conjunctivitis is one drop in each eye per day, This can be increased to four times a day if required. However, do not increase your dose yourself - talk to your doctor if you believe your dose is not adequately controlling your symptoms.
Before administering the eye drops, wash your hands. Tilt your head back, and squeeze one drop inside the lower lid of your eye Make sure the dropper bottle does not touch the eye. Close your eye, and wipe away any excess fluid with a clean tissue. Repeat in the other eye as needed.
If you are using other eye drops as well as Rapitil, you should try to use them at least 15 minutes apart.
Store Rapitil in a cool, dry place, free from heat and moisture. Do not refrigerate. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
