What is Flixonase?
Flixonase nasal spray is used to treat the inflammation in the nasal lining caused by allergic rhinitis. It also helps to ease sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, and any itching, swelling or irritation in the nose.
It is effective for rhinitis symptoms caused by seasonal allergies such as hayfever and year round allergies caused by allergens such as animal dander, mould and dust mites.
How does Flixonase work?
The active ingredient in Flixonase aqueous spray is fluticasone propionate. Fluticasone propionate is a corticosteroid that works to reduce the inflammation and irritation in the nose caused by allergic rhinitis.
Do not use Flixonase if:
- You’re allergic to fluticasone propionate or any of the other ingredients in this medication
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
Talk to your doctor before using Flixonase if:
- You’ve ever had an infection in your nose
- You’ve ever had an operation on your nose
- You’ve been taking steroids for a while
- You’re taking ritonavir or cobicistat for HIV
- You’re taking medication such as ketoconazole for fungal infections
Flixonase contains benzalkonium chloride, which may cause problems with some people’s breathing.
How do you take Flixonase?
Make sure you use Flixonase as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Continue using the nasal spray until your doctor tells you to stop. If you stop before, your symptoms may return.
Use Flixonase once every day, ideally in the morning. The typical dose for adults is 2 sprays in each nostril, but your doctor may lower this to 1 spray per nostril if your symptoms start to improve. Follow the usage instructions in the patient information leaflet.
Take care not to get Flixonase in your eyes.
How effective is Flixonase?
Flixonase nasal spray is clinically proven to treat allergic rhinitis.
It can take a few days for Flixonase to start working, but you should keep using it even if you don’t immediately feel the effects. Keep using Flixonase until your doctor tells you to stop, even if you feel much better in the meantime. Your symptoms may return if you stop using this medication before your doctor tells you to.
