What is Loperamide 2mg?
Loperamide 2mg capsules are used to treat bouts of short-term diarrhoea lasting no longer than 48 hours. They are also used to treat IBS diarrhoea.
Loperamide hydrochloride capsules are an Imodium alternative since they are a generic version of the Imodium brand of medication.
How does Loperamide work?
The active ingredient in these capsules is loperamide hydrochloride 2mg. This works to slow an overactive bowel and allow the salts and water to be absorbed into the body rather than lost with the diarrhoea.
You shouldn’t take Loperamide 2mg hard capsules if:
- You are allergic to loperamide or any of the ingredients in this medicine.
- You have severe diarrhoea after taking antibiotics.
- You are experiencing a flare-up of a bowel condition such as ulcerative colitis.
- You are constipated or your stomach is swollen.
- You have severe dysentery, including symptoms like blood in your stools and a high temperature.
Loperamide capsules aren’t suitable for children.
How do you take Loperamide?
Always take Loperamide capsules as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
The usual dosage for short-term diarrhoea is as follows: take two capsules to start treatment, then one capsule after each loose bowel movement (unless your doctor has said differently). Swallow the capsules whole with water.
Do not take more than 6 capsules in 24 hours and don’t take this medication for diarrhoea attacks lasting more than 48 hours.
How effective is Loperamide?
As long as you follow the instructions for taking loperamide capsules, they are an effective diarrhoea treatment.
You should make sure you drink plenty of water to replace that which has been lost with your diarrhoea. A product such as Dioralyte may also be useful in cases of severe diarrhoea as it will help to replace any salts that have been lost too.
