Salamol

What is Salamol?

The Salamol Salbutamol Sulfate 100 microgram metered dose powder inhaler (referred to as the Salamol Inhaler throughout this information) is used for the relief of acute bronchospasm, symptoms of reversible airway obstruction and asthma attacks. Identifiable, as the blue inhaler, Salamol also works as a ‘reliever’ inhaler and is to be used during an asthma attack.

For further information on Salamol, please see the Patient Information Leaflet here.

How it works

During an asthma attack, the muscles that surround the airways become tightened, inflamed and produce a thick mucus. This causes the lungs to go into bronchospasm which makes it difficult to breathe.

The active ingredient in Salamol is Salbutamol and can provide relief within minutes of inhalation. Salbutamol inhalers work by relaxing the spasming of the bronchial muscle. It can relieve wheezing and shortness of breath for a person having an asthma attack for up to 4 - 6 hours.

Before you take it

It is important for your own health and safety that if you already experience symptoms of an allergic reaction related to Salamol inhalers, Salbutamol sulfate, or any other ingredient in this drug, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking the Salamol inhaler.

We do not prescribe any medications to people under 18 years old.

The Salamol inhaler is unsuitable for some patients. You should contact your doctor or medical professional if any of the following apply:

  • Your asthma is active (you have frequent asthma symptoms or flare-ups) and you need to use more puffs of your ‘reliever’
  • Your asthma appears to be worsening
  • Your daily ‘preventer’ or brown inhaler is becoming less effective
  • You have problems with your thyroid or adrenal glands
  • You are using diuretics (these products can also be administered to treat high blood pressure or a heart condition)
  • You have high blood pressure
  • Have ever had heart disease
  • You are taking xanthine derivatives (such as theophylline) or steroid treatments to treat acute asthma
  • Your asthma is extremely unstable and preventer inhalers are ineffective
