What is Clenil Modulite?
Clenil Modulite is a pressurised inhalation solution (also referred to as the Clenil Modulite Inhaler throughout this information) also known as a ‘preventer’ or brown inhaler. It is used to treat symptoms of mild, moderate and severe asthma.
The active ingredient in the Clenil Modulite Inhaler, beclometasone dipropionate, is known as a steroid which belongs to a group of drugs called corticosteroids.
Corticosteroids have anti-inflammatory properties. They ease breathing problems by reducing swelling in the walls of the air passages.
For further information on Clenil Modulite, please see the Patient Information Leaflet here.
How it works
An asthma attack can happen through exposure to triggers. Triggers are irritants such as pets, dust, pollen and smoke. During an asthma attack, the surrounding muscles around the airways tighten, causing the airway to narrow. This can cause the lungs to produce a thick mucus and become swollen and inflamed.
The Clenil Modulite inhaler is used for asthma control and is to be used regularly. It may take up to a few days for your inhaler to work. It’s important to continue to use your inhaler even if you feel better. Do not stop use unless advised by a doctor or asthma nurse.
Preventer inhalers are not be used during an asthma attack. If you’re having an asthma attack, you need to use your reliever inhaler.
A rescue and preventer inhaler is not the same product. Carry a ‘reliever’ inhaler with you at all times including while at home and during travel. This is because it helps you to breathe quickly during an asthma attack.
Before you take it
Most healthy adults can use Clenil Modulite. The higher doses of 200 and 250, however, are unsuitable for children and adolescents under the age of 18.
We do not prescribe any medications to people who are under 18 years old.
It is important for your own health and safety that if you already suffer symptoms of an allergic reaction related to Clenil Modulite, medicine that contains beclometasone dipropionate or any other ingredient in this drug, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist first before taking this medication.
The Clenil Modulite Inhaler is unsuitable for some patients. You should consult your doctor or healthcare professional if any of the following apply:
- You have, are taking medicines for, or have had tuberculosis
- Your asthma symptoms are becoming worse
- You have taken any other over-the-counter steroid treatments
- Your ‘reliever’ inhaler is becoming less effective or you need to take it more often
- You have problems with your thyroid or adrenal glands
