What is generic Malarone?
Generic Malarone is the generic version of the drug Malarone. It is a low cost version of Malarone and is medically equivalent. Generic Malarone is used to prevent and treat malaria.
It is important to note that it is still possible to get malaria even after taking the necessary precautions/ Some types of malaria take a long time to cause symptoms, so the illness may not start until several days, weeks, or even months after returning from abroad. See a doctor immediately if you experience the following symptoms after returning home:

How does generic Malarone work?
Generic malarone belongs to a group of medicines called antimalarials. It contains two active ingredients, atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride.
Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, which passes the malaria parasite into the bloodstream. Generic Malarone prevents malaria by killing this parasite. For people who are already infected with malaria, generic Malarone kills these parasites.
How do you take generic Malarone?
Always take this medication exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has prescribed it to you.
Take one tablet daily starting two days prior to leaving for your trip. Continue taking generic Malarone for the entire duration of your trip to the malaria risk zone. You must continue to take generic Malarone for seven days upon leaving the malaria risk zone.
It is very important to complete the entire course of this medication. Failing to do so could leave you vulnerable to the malaria virus.
How effective is generic Malarone?
Generic Malarone is an clinically proven antimalarial treatment. For increased results, take generic Malarone at the same time each day, with food or a milky drink where possible. This will increase the amount of generic Malarone your body can absorb, ultimately making your treatment more effective.
In addition to taking an antimalarial medication, there are special precautions you should take to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitos. These include:
- Use insect repellent on exposed areas of the skin
- Wear light coloured clothing that covers most of the body
- Sleep in a screened room or under a mosquito net
- Close windows and doors at sunset
- Consider using an insecticide (mats, sprays, plug-ins)
What are the most common side effects of generic Malarone?
Like all medicines, generic Malarone can cause side effects. Not everybody will experience side effects and they are usually mild to moderate in nature and will only last a short period of time.
The most common side effects of generic Malarone are:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Stomach discomfort
