Epiduo Gel

What is Epiduo Gel?

Epiduo gel is used for the treatment of topical acne. Acne is a condition that causes the skin to become oily or develop spots. It can develop in numerous areas, including the back, chest and face, and can be a source of embarrassment or reduced self-esteem in some patients. Epiduo gel can help reduce the appearance of spots or blackheads.

Epiduo gel is prescription only medication. You must have a valid prescription in order to buy it. Alternatively, we can prescribe Epiduo gel following a brief online assessment. Contact us to find out more.

Epiduo gel contains two active ingredients - adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. For more information on Epiduo gel, consult the patient information leaflet.

How it works

Epiduo gel contains two active ingredients. Adapalene will increase the turnover of skin cells, and also has anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it will reduce the redness and swelling of spots. Benzoyl peroxide is a keratolytic medication, which breaks down keratin, an important part of the skin structure. In combination these ingredients exfoliate the skin, reducing the appearance of acne and spots. Benzoyl peroxide also kills the bacteria that are associated with causing acne.

Epiduo gel is a long term treatment - you will usually need to use it consistently for a number of weeks before your acne shows any measurable signs of improvement.

Before you take it

You must not use Epiduo gel if you are allergic to either of the active ingredients, adapalene or benzoyl peroxide. Consult with your doctor to discuss an alternative treatment for your acne.

You must not use Epiduo gel on areas where you have cuts, scrapes, bruises or eczema. This can cause skin irritation. You must be careful to note any skin sensitivity that may occur when using this medication, and this must be reported to your doctor.

Be careful to keep Epiduo gel away from sensitive areas such as the eyes, nostrils or the mouth. Should contact occur, wash the affected areas gently with warm water.

Epiduo gel may bleach coloured fabrics. For this reason, ensure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after you have used the gel.

You should avoid exposing your skin to excessive sunlight or UV light while using Epiduo gel. It is recommended to use suncream or wear protective clothing over the affected area.

Epiduo gel should not be used during pregnancy. You must go to your doctor to discuss an alternative treatment for your acne if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while using Epiduo gel, stop using it and consult your doctor.

Epiduo gel can be used while breastfeeding. You should be careful, however, not to apply Epiduo to the chest area, as it may come into contact with the nursing infant.

You should not use any other acne treatments containing adapalene or benzoyl peroxide while also using Epiduo gel.

Take care not to use cosmetic products that may clog the pores or dry the skin while using Epiduo gel if you are using it on your face.

This is not an exhaustive list of warnings or interactions. For a full list, consult the patient information leaflet.
