What is Losec?

Losec is the branded version of Omeprazole and is used to treat acid reflux. Omeprazole is the active ingredient in both Omeprazole tablets and Losec tablets. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Proton pump inhibitors reduce the amount of acid made by the stomach.

Omeprazole is a low cost alternative to Losec, but they work in exactly the same way.

How does Losec work?

Losec, like other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), works to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. This limits the amount of stomach acid travelling up the oesophagus leading to reduced acid reflux symptoms.

How do you take Losec?

Always take this medication as it has been prescribed to you. Generally, to treat acid reflux, one capsule is taken daily, preferably at the same time each morning. Losec can be taken with or without food. Do not exceed more than directed.

Do not chew or crush Losec tablets.

How effective is Losec in treating acid reflux?

Losec is an effective way of treating acid reflux. In addition to taking proton pump inhibitors like Losec and Omeprazole, there are some lifestyle factors to consider in order to further prevent the incidence of acid reflux. These include avoiding fatty or spicy foods, quitting smoking and losing weight.

What are the most common side effects of Losec?

Like all medicines, Losec can cause side effects. However, not everyone experiences side effects and they are generally mild to moderate and only last for a short period of time. The most common side effects of Losec include headaches, nausea, and diarrhoea.

For less frequent side effects, please see the patient information leaflet.
